What It Means to Be a Micro-Press

What It Means to Be a Micro-Press

At Sled Dog Publishing, we believe the story is paramount.

There is something wonderfully strange about being a micro-press.

There is no giant building (just a bedroom used as an office and a basement space to fulfill orders) filled with departments. No team for every task. No warehouse around the corner, or marketing budget waiting to be unleashed. Just a few real people with a stubborn belief in good stories, and a willingness (if not need) to do a little bit of everything.

At Sled Dog Publishing,  we do it all. That means spending the morning working on a manuscript, our afternoon reviewing a book cover, and the evening thinking about how to help a new reader discover one of our books. We spend our weekends, evenings and any spare moments building this press.

Publishing is creative, but it is also work, practical and mundane often. Someone has to prepare the files, files the receipts, check the details, build the product page, pack the order, answer the email, and tell people the book exists.

That is the challenge of being a micro-press. It is also the joy.

Small does not mean careless

Being a micro-press, we only publish a few books each year, but that doesn't mean our books receive less attention. It means they receive more.

Every single title matters. Every cover, every sentence gets another look. To us, this isn't product, it is story. And that, in the end, is why we are here.

To have stories that aren’t caged in by trope or genre or convention. They don’t need a quick market pitch that connects to 5 other books. Stories that embrace the adventure intrepid readers crave. Great care is taken to make sure our stories meet that hunger. So not much happens quickly.

Good books take time. Sometimes the schedule changes. Sometimes a cover needs another round. Sometimes a story surprises us and asks for more room than we expected.

We would rather move carefully than rush a book into the world before it is ready.

A home for unusual stories

Sled Dog Publishing is built around the idea that stories should run wild.

That can mean a middle-grade adventure about courage and friendship. It can mean gothic horror, strange fiction, thrillers, classics, signed editions, or a puzzle book for someone who enjoys a darker challenge. Our catalog is not limited to one narrow shelf.

What connects these books is unquenchable curiosity.

We like stories that put readers somewhere unexpected. We like books with atmosphere, personality, mystery, humor, heart, and a little bit of weirdness. We like work that gives readers something to think about after they close the cover.

Our fiction and puzzle books may look different from one another, but they share the same invitation: join the adventure.

Running wild, one book at a time

We know we are small. We know that. A micro-press is not built overnight. It grows one book, one reader, one conversation, and one shared recommendation at a time. And since our start in 2024, it has been slow and steady.

Some days, growth looks like a new title arriving in the shop. Some days, it looks like someone discovering an author for the first time. Sometimes it is a reader telling a friend, “You have to read this.”

Those moments matter.

Sled Dog Publishing is still growing, still learning, and still finding new ways to bring stories into the world. We are proud to be small enough to care about the details and ambitious enough to keep moving forward.

So if you are a reader looking for something unexpected, we hope you will come along.

There are plenty of stories still waiting to run wild.
